As defined by Merriam-Webster, an advocate is “one that supports or promotes the interests of another.” Advocacy services may apply to a variety of circumstances for LSU students. The goal is not to take the place of the student and complete the task, but rather to plan with and empower the student with skills the student learned and/or developed though the resolution process.
The C.A.R.E. Manager may provide advocacy services or refer students to others who may best serve the student depending on the issue. Advocacy issues which may be addressed include, but are not limited to, victim services, academic concerns, accountability processes and psychological or physical concerns. Upon contact with the student, the C.A.R.E. Manager will assess the situation and help the student to formulate an approach with which the student is comfortable.
Advocacy services may be active or passive. According to the Code of Conduct 7.5A, a student may “appear along or with one other person of his or her choice to advise and assist him or her at the hearing. The adviser may not address the hearing panel or examine or cross-examine witnesses. The adviser’s sole function during a hearing shall be to assist he student in preparing the student’s presentation before the hearing panel.” LSU Code of Conduct, Section 7.5A, August 2002. The presence at the hearing would qualify as passive advocacy. An example of active service would be if the C.A.R.E. Manager contacted a professor or administrator to ask for clarification on a class policy. Regardless of the type of advocacy, the student retains ultimate control of the services he or she wishes to receive. The advocate merely assists in the process and provides guidance.
Regardless of the services sought, the office and staff remain respectful of the privacy of the student. Additionally, staff will remain in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
